Tools and Materials Needed

Before you start, gather the necessary tools and materials:

  • New door handle kit (including screws, latch, and strike plate)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Drill (optional)
  • Drill bits (optional)
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Chisel (if needed for mortising)
  • Safety glasses

Step-by-Step Installation Process

1. Remove the Old Door Handle

If you are replacing an existing door handle, you will need to remove the old one first:

  1. Unscrew the Handle:

    • Locate the screws on the interior side of the handle.
    • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws.
    • Carefully pull apart the handle from both sides of the door.
  2. Remove the Latch:

    • Unscrew the screws holding the latch plate on the edge of the door.
    • Pull the latch out from the door.
  3. Remove the Strike Plate:

    • Unscrew the strike plate from the door frame.
    • Remove the plate and any old screws.

2. Prepare the Door and Door Frame

Before installing the new handle, ensure that the door and frame are ready:

  1. Check the Fit:

    • Test the new latch and strike plate to ensure they fit into the existing holes. If necessary, use a chisel to adjust the mortise (the recess in the door or frame) for a snug fit.
  2. Mark New Holes (if needed):

    • If the new handle requires different screw placements, mark the new positions with a pencil.
  3. Drill New Holes (if needed):

    • If new holes are required, use a drill with an appropriate-sized bit to make pilot holes for the screws.

3. Install the New Latch

  1. Insert the Latch:

    • Slide the new latch into the hole on the edge of the door.
    • Ensure that the beveled side of the latch faces the direction in which the door closes.
  2. Secure the Latch:

    • Align the latch plate with the mortise on the door edge.
    • Screw the latch plate into place using a Phillips screwdriver.

4. Install the Door Handle

  1. Align the Handle:

    • Insert the exterior handle through the hole in the latch.
    • Ensure that the handle is correctly aligned and fits snugly against the door.
  2. Attach the Interior Handle:

    • Position the interior handle on the opposite side of the door, aligning it with the spindle (the rod that connects both handles through the latch mechanism).
  3. Secure the Handles:

    • Insert the screws through the interior handle and tighten them using a Phillips screwdriver.
    • Ensure that both handles are securely attached and function smoothly.

5. Install the Strike Plate

  1. Position the Strike Plate:

    • Align the strike plate with the hole in the door frame where the latch bolt will engage.
  2. Secure the Strike Plate:

    • Screw the strike plate into place using a Phillips screwdriver.
    • Ensure that the plate is flush with the door frame and that the latch bolt smoothly enters the strike plate when the door is closed.

6. Test the Door Handle

  1. Operate the Handle:

    • Test the door handle to ensure it operates smoothly.
    • Open and close the door to check that the latch bolt engages correctly with the strike plate.
  2. Make Adjustments:

    • If the handle is stiff or the latch does not engage properly, make any necessary adjustments to the alignment of the handle, latch, or strike plate.
